The United States has executed coordinated strikes on three nuclear facilities in Iran, President Donald Trump announced, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the two countries.
According to Trump, the operation involved U.S. Air Force B-2 bombers and Navy submarines, which launched Tomahawk cruise missiles at targets considered central to Iran’s nuclear program.
The three sites reportedly struck were the Fordow uranium enrichment plant, located deep in Iran’s mountainous terrain, and facilities in Natanz and Isfahan.
Hassan Abedini, political director of Iran’s state broadcaster, stated that the facilities had been fully evacuated of materials and equipment prior to the attack. As a result, he claimed, no significant damage was sustained.
Former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs Mark Kimmitt urged caution, noting that the effectiveness of the strikes was not immediately clear. He said it was too early to confirm whether the facilities had been fully destroyed.
The Fordow site, in particular, is considered difficult to target due to its location roughly 80–90 meters underground, within solid rock. This has made it largely impervious to most conventional munitions.
To penetrate the facility, the U.S. deployed B-2 bombers — currently the only American aircraft capable of carrying the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP).
It’s a 13,600-kg non-nuclear bunker-busting bomb. The MOP contains a 2,423-kg warhead and is designed to destroy fortified underground targets at depths exceeding 60 meters.
According to an anonymous US official, six B-2 bombers were involved in the strike on Fordow, and one bomber was involved in the strike on the Natanz facility. At the same time, submarines also participated in the attacks on Natanz and Isfahan, launching 30 Tomahawk cruise missiles.
An official statement from the Iranian government is currently expected, which, according to American analysts, could potentially be a de facto declaration of war on the United States.
B-2 bombers were recorded taking off yesterday from an air base in Missouri. It was expected that they would be directed to the island of Guam.
