Two Swedes Detained in Finland on Suspicion of Espionage

Finland’s Central Criminal Police (KRP) is investigating a suspected espionage case involving two Swedish citizens, aged 37 and 40.

Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat reported the case.

According to investigators, the suspected offenses may have taken place between August 30 and September 12, 2026.

Authorities have not yet disclosed where the suspected espionage activity took place.

The two men have the same last name.

According to Ilta-Sanomat, the two men live at the same address in the municipality of Härnösand in eastern Sweden, in Västernorrland County. Their details do not appear in Finland’s population register.

On September 16, the prosecutor’s office and the KRP requested that both men be remanded in custody.

That same day, the Helsinki District Court granted the request and remanded the suspects in custody based on a level of suspicion described in Finnish law as “there is reason to suspect.”

The head of the investigation, KRP Commissioner Jussi Luoto, reportef that the investigation is still in its early stages.

He did not disclose how the authorities obtained information about the suspected espionage, what it may have been targeting, or where and when the police detained the suspects.

The suspects are currently in Finland and personally attended the court hearing on their detention.

Militarnyi previously reported that the Helsinki Court of Appeal sentenced Russian national Yan Petrovsky, also known as Voislav Torden, to 12.5 years in prison for three war crimes, although he had previously faced the possibility of a life sentence.
