Trump Announces Plans for New U.S. Military Base in Poland

U.S. President Donald Trump said there has been significant progress in negotiations over the establishment of a new U.S. military base in Poland.

He stated this on Truth Social on September 17, 2026.

Trump highlighted the role of Polish President Karol Nawrocki and said that the location of the base could be announced soon.

“If this happens, the location will be announced very soon,” he said, calling the move historic for the U.S.-Polish alliance.

According to the Associated Press, a U.S. delegation inspected several potential sites in Poland over the previous week. The agency did not provide specific dates for the visit.

According to Wirtualna Polska, two locations are being considered for the permanent U.S. base: Poznań and Powidz. Sources cited by the media note that Poznań is the leading option, as it is already home to Camp Kościuszko, the U.S. Army’s V Corps forward headquarters.

Powidz is home to the 33rd Air Transport Base and U.S. APS-2 storage facilities containing equipment for an armored brigade. Wrocław and Strachowice Airport were previously also considered as potential locations. However, according to WP, negotiations are currently focused on Poznań and Powidz.

On September 16, 2026, the Polish president said that the transition of U.S. troops to a permanent presence was approaching. According to him, around 10,000 U.S. service members are currently stationed in the country.

Negotiations on expanding the U.S. military presence had been underway since at least September 3, 2025. At a meeting at the White House that day, Trump and Nawrocki discussed increasing the troop contingent, establishing a permanent presence, and developing military infrastructure.

One possible way to increase the U.S. troop presence involved redeploying troops from another European country. As Militarnyi reported on May 9, 2026, Trump had considered transferring U.S. troops from Germany to Poland.

Meanwhile, the two countries continued to expand cooperation on arms procurement. On September 12, 2026, Militarnyi reported that a $4 billion loan agreement had been signed under the Foreign Military Financing program to enable Poland to purchase U.S. weapons.

U.S. military infrastructure in Poland also includes the Aegis Ashore ballistic missile defense facility in Redzikowo. In July 2024, it was reported that the facility had become operational.
