Türkiye Deploys F-16 Fighter Jets to Patrol Baltic Airspace Near Russia’s Borders

The Turkish Air Force will join NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission by deploying five F-16 fighter jets and 76 military personnel to Ämari Air Base in Estonia.

The Turkish contingent from the 181st Panther Squadron will perform the mission from August through November.

The military personnel will maintain 24/7 quick reaction alert duty, remaining on constant standby to respond to any potential violations of the Baltic region’s airspace.

The patrols are performed as part of NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission, which is responsible for safeguarding the airspace of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – three countries that do not maintain their own fighter aircraft. The mission has been in operation since 2004, when the Baltic states joined the Alliance.

This is not the first time Turkish units have participated in NATO’s joint missions to protect Allied airspace, both in the Baltic region and in other theatres of operation.

Earlier in 2026, Germany hosted the maritime phase of the NATO exercise STEADFAST DART 26, during which the Alliance’s Allied Reaction Force performed a large-scale amphibious landing exercise at the Putlos military training area in the state of Schleswig-Holstein.

Turkish marines aboard the TCG Anadolu drone carrier-amphibious assault ship played one of the key roles in the exercise. During the maritime phase of the drills, the troops’ task was to liberate territory occupied by a simulated adversary on NATO’s eastern flank.
