Sweden Will Deploy Gripen Fighter Jets And Ships to Protect the Finnish-Russian Border

The Swedish government has decided to deploy its military units to Finland to strengthen border patrols along the border with Russia.

Swedish broadcaster SVT reported this, citing its own sources.

The decision was made in response to a request from Finland for military assistance due to recurring aerial threats linked to Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Over the past year, Finland has repeatedly recorded incursions by Ukrainian UAVs affected by electronic warfare, as well as airspace violations by Russian aircraft.

As part of the operation, the Swedish Armed Forces will soon deploy JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets and military ships to patrol areas along the Finnish-Russian border.

This fall, Swedish Army units specializing in air and drone defense may also be deployed to Finland if needed.

The operation is being conducted in coordination with NATO based on bilateral agreements between the countries, which grant the Swedish government the mandate to deploy forces to defend Finland’s territorial integrity.

Sweden will assume command of NATO’s forward-deployed ground forces in Finland.

The multinational forces will be a key part of NATO’s enhanced deterrence and defense presence in Northern Europe.

They will consist of a main battalion-sized combat group in Finland and a permanent multinational headquarters.

Russia is also expanding its military bases and reinforcing troops along the border with Northern Europe and the Baltic states.

According to estimates by sources in the Danish intelligence services, these actions may indicate preparations for a potential large-scale conflict with European states in the Baltic Sea region.
