On March 17, the Government of Slovakia approved the transfer of 13 MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine.
Eduard Heger, Prime Minister of the country made a corresponding statement.
The fighter jets will be transferred under the defense assistance provided by Slovakia to Ukraine.
The additional aircraft, which Ukraine has requested since the beginning of the war, should help the Air Force of Ukraine establish control over airspace and intercept enemy targets.
“The Government of Slovakia has just approved the shipment of 13 MiG-29s to Ukraine! Promises must be kept, and when President Volodymyr Zelensky asked for more weapons, including fighter jets, I said we would do our best. Glad others are doing the same. Military aid is the key to Ukraine being able to protect itself and all of Europe from Russia,” he wrote on Twitter.
As previously reported, together with Slovakia, Poland is ready to hand over MiG-29 fighter jets to the Ukrainian Air Force. Jaroslav Nad’, Minister of Defense of Slovakia, announced this.
He noted that he had spoken with Mariusz Błaszczak, Head of the Polish Ministry of Defense, at the meeting of EU defense ministers on March 8 in Stockholm, and said that Warsaw would agree to a joint process of transferring MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine.
In an interview with CNN, President of Poland Andrzej Duda confirmed his readiness to take such actions as well. He stated that Warsaw was ready to transfer its MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine as part of an international coalition.
On March 16, Andrzej Duda announced that in the following days Poland planned to hand over the first four MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine and later all of its aircraft of this type.
The Slovak authorities announced the possibility of transferring Soviet-era MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine as early as last year. However, the conversation did not evolve further.
On February 5 of this year, the head of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Oleksii Reznikov, said that the Allies would provide the Armed Forces of Ukraine with tactical aviation and “only the type of fighter jets is being discussed”. And on February 9, 2023, Heger promised that the Slovak authorities would do everything possible to hand over fighter jets to Ukraine.
As previously reported, on September 1, 2022, Slovakia decommissioned its MiG-29 fighter jets.
