The Singapore Army has received the latest Israeli-made SIGMA 155 mm self-propelled howitzers, which will gradually replace its outdated artillery systems.
The Ministry of Defence of Singapore reported this.
The howitzers were displayed during celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the 6th Singapore Division.
Their appearance in the released photographs provided the first public confirmation that Singapore’s military had procured the systems.
The Ministry of Defence noted the new fully automated wheeled howitzer, referred to by the agency as the Truck Mounted Gun, will gradually replace the tracked SSPH Primus self-propelled howitzers and FH-2000 towed guns.
The SIGMA, developed by Israel’s Elbit Systems, is equipped with a 155 mm gun with a 52-calibre barrel and mounted on an Oshkosh 10×10 wheeled chassis. Its automated turret provides 360-degree targeting and firing capability, while a crew of two to three service members can operate the system from the armoured cab.
According to the stated specifications, the system carries 40 shells, 216 modular propellant charges, and 45 primers. Its maximum rate of fire is eight rounds per minute, while its firing range varies from 41 to 70 km depending on the type of ammunition used.
In addition to the howitzer, the Singaporean military unveiled the Precision Land Shooter, a mobile precision-strike system based on an Isuzu D-Max vehicle. It is equipped with nine launch cells arranged in three rows of three.
Asian Military Review suggests that the system is designed to launch loitering munitions. Janes, meanwhile, notes its visual similarity to Spike NLOS missile launchers. The type of weapon it uses has not yet been officially disclosed.
The Ministry of Defence of Singapore emphasized that the Precision Land Shooter is designed to deliver faster and more precise strikes in complex environments, including urban combat.
Militarnyi previously reported that in November 2021, Elbit Systems signed a $106 million contract to supply SIGMA self-propelled howitzers to an unnamed country in the Asia-Pacific region.
At the time, the manufacturer did not disclose the customer or the number of systems ordered. The recent unveiling of the SIGMA in Singapore suggests that the country may have been the recipient of the artillery systems under the 2021 contract.
