Russia Calls NATO Activity in Arctic a ‘Direct Threat’

Russia considers increased NATO military activity in the Arctic a direct threat to its security.

This was stated by Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov.

Lavrov claims that NATO military exercises and other activities in the Arctic are ‘aggressive’ in nature.

According to him, such activity increases the risk of incidents that could lead to an armed confrontation.

“Such military activity in the Far North poses direct threats to Russia’s security,” Lavrov stated.

Lavrov’s statement came after NATO launched the Arctic Sentry mission in February 2026, aimed at strengthening the Alliance’s military presence in the Arctic.

NATO links its increased attention to the region to growing tensions in its relations with Russia.

The operation was launched in response to Russian activity in the region and increased intelligence efforts, both surface and underwater.

NATO believes Russia is directing its forces toward detecting and potentially damaging undersea infrastructure, particularly communications cables. Such actions could threaten communication links between the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, and other European countries.

At the same time, Russia and China are promoting the use of the Northern Sea Route as an alternative for international shipping amid instability around the Suez Canal and in the Middle East.

Moscow actively uses the development of Arctic routes for propaganda purposes, presenting them as a promising alternative to traditional shipping lanes. At the same time, Russia is strengthening its military presence in the region to ensure their operation.

Moscow says the deployment of military forces is necessary to ensure the safety of civilian shipping and protect Arctic infrastructure.

At the same time, Russian forces are actively conducting intelligence activities in the region, raising concerns among NATO countries.
