Russians attacked the Kharkiv region with bombs equipped with extended-range UMPK kits, capable of flying up to 95 kilometers and reaching not only Kharkiv but also communities south of the city.

Spartak Borysenko, Head of the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, shared this with Suspilne.

He stated that this modernized aerial weapon’s first use was recorded at the end of May.

“On May 31, 2025, at approximately 10:30 a.m., four guided bombs equipped with extended-range UMPK kits were launched from a Su-34 aircraft originating from the settlement of Tomarivka in Russia’s Belgorod region. This marked the first documented use of this type of munition in the Kharkiv region. Additionally, according to operational intelligence, similar bombs were deployed in the Sumy region earlier in May,” Spartak Borysenko, Head of the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, stated.

He added that the Unified Gliding and Correction Module (UMPK) is typically integrated into high-explosive bombs by Russian forces.

“While last year, the average range from the launch site to the impact zone was between 60 and 80 kilometers, we can now confirm that these guided bombs are being used at distances of up to 95 kilometers. We understand that they are currently testing these systems, and it’s possible the range could increase further. If we look at a map, it’s clear that from launch points in the Tomarivka area, any location within Kharkiv could be targeted with these guided bombs,” the prosecutor reported.

He clarified that heavier mounting systems, extended wings, and newly developed guidance technologies make the increased range possible.

“An analysis of the fragments recovered during on-site inspections conducted by prosecutors and investigators has confirmed the use of different, heavier mounting systems, enlarged wings, and newly developed control mechanisms for these wings. These enhancements enable the bombs to reach distances of up to 95 kilometers,” Borysenko noted.

He noted that the speed and altitude of launches using the new bomb kits remain the same as before:

“The launches are executed from an altitude of 9,000 meters by Su-34 aircraft. In these cases, the speed of the guided aerial bombs was between 700 and 800 kilometers per hour.”
