MBDA has begun the construction of a new production facility in Germany to manufacture GEM-T anti-aircraft missiles used in the Patriot system, as well as other guided missiles.

This was announced by the German branch of MBDA in a press release.

On November 18, 2024, a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for the new guided missile production facility took place at the site in Schrobenhausen.

The ceremony was attended by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Bavarian Prime Minister Dr. Markus Söder.

MBDA’s new production facility in Schrobenhausen will become a so-called “missile hub”—a center for the production, maintenance, repair and modernization of guided missiles.

The new facility will serve the interests of both the German Armed Forces and NATO partners.

The new production facility will cover about 6,000 square meters and is expected to create over 300 new jobs. The construction is scheduled to be completed in September 2026.

As the company explains, the new production facilities became necessary after contracts had been signed with MBDA for the production and supply of up to 1,000 Patriot GEM-T missiles as part of the European Missile Defence initiative for Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain and Sweden.

Contracts were also signed for 2,600 PARM mines and several thousand Brimstone-guided missiles. In addition, MBDA’s German subsidiary also plays a leading role in the implementation and commissioning of the Arrow 3 missile defense system.

“MBDA is actively shaping this turning point. We are aware of our responsibility and are making our industrial contribution to increasing ammunition stocks and combat readiness,” said Thomas Gottschild, Managing Director of MBDA Germany.

According to Hartpunkt, the company plans to invest about €250 million in the production of guided missiles at its Bavarian plant in Schrobenhausen over the next three years.

At the same time, production in Germany will be the only production of GEM-T missiles for the Patriot system outside the United States. But only the final assembly line will be located there.
