The American company Lockheed Martin has reported delays in the delivery of F-16 Block 70 fighter jets to Bulgaria.
Bulgarian Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov discussed the implementation of the contract with company representatives.
During the talks, the contractor reported difficulties in the production process that will delay the delivery of eight F-16 Block 70 aircraft until the second quarter of 2030.
The eight fighter jets ordered under the second contract were scheduled to be delivered by 2027.
“It is important for Bulgaria that the delay is kept as short as possible and does not place any additional financial burden on the state,” Bulgarian Defense Minister said during the talks.
Dimitar Stoyanov said the ultimate goal is to have the fighter jets ready for combat missions next year.
He also raised the need to expand training opportunities for Bulgarian pilots at F-16 training centers and ensure the timely delivery of spare parts and other components needed to maintain and operate the aircraft.
The minister also noted that Bulgaria had sent a request to the United States for used F-16s to help maintain the Bulgarian Air Force’s required capabilities.
Bulgaria placed its first order for eight F-16 Block 70 fighter jets in 2019, worth $512 million. In November 2022, the country ordered another eight fighters for $1.3 billion.
The first two-seat F-16D was handed over to Bulgaria on January 31, 2025, at the company’s plant in Greenville, South Carolina. The aircraft arrived in Bulgaria in April 2025.
The fighter jet, which arrived in Bulgaria in early April 2025, became inoperable after landing and has been unable to fly while awaiting spare parts.
In December 2025, Bulgaria received all eight F-16 Block 70 fighter jets ordered under its first contract with the United States.
