In 2025, Germany plans to provide the Ukrainian Defense Forces with 500,000 artillery shells, a significant increase of more than one-third compared to previous plans.
The German Aid to Ukraine project announced this, citing the Federal Ministry of Defence (German).
According to the project, Germany is set to contribute approximately 500,000 of the 2 million artillery shells the EU intends to deliver to Ukraine this year.
This is approximately 130,000 more artillery shells compared to the forecast published at the end of February 2025. At that time, the Ministry of Defence stated that it had planned to provide 370,000 artillery shells over the course of 2025.
In the first three months of 2025, Germany has already delivered 92,000 artillery shells, including 23,000 122 mm shells and 69,000 155 mm shells.
As the authors of the project suggest, this was made possible by additional funding allocated by the German government for military aid to Ukraine.
At the end of March 2025, a package of additional military assistance worth €3 billion for 2025 was officially approved. As a result, the total planned military aid from Germany for 2025 has increased to €7 billion. In addition, €8.3 billion were allocated in “commitment appropriations.”
Thanks to these appropriations, the Ministry of Defence can now enter into long-term contracts with Rheinmetall, Diehl Defence, and other defense companies. This ensures the provision of military equipment to Ukraine worth billions of euros for the coming years.
In addition, under the Czech initiative for supplying ammunition, 1.5 million large-caliber munitions could be delivered to Ukraine in 2025, provided the necessary funding is available.
As part of this initiative, the Czech Republic is using its diplomatic and industrial capabilities to search for and purchase large-caliber ammunition worldwide, with funding provided by NATO allies.
In 2024, as part of this initiative, approximately 1.5 million large-caliber munitions were delivered to Ukraine. One-third of them were 155mm shells, while the rest were other types of munitions with calibers over 100mm.
At the beginning of April, it was reported that the Czech initiative had already been sufficiently funded to ensure monthly deliveries until September 2025.
