Germany’s Army will establish a drone systems regiment in 2027, which will become part of the 10th Panzer Division.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius announced the plans during a visit to the Experimentalserie Land 2026 trials in Wietzendorf, as reported by Hartpunkt.
The newly established formation will consolidate capabilities for operating unmanned systems with a range of up to 500 km.
The regiment will also include an electronic warfare company and units tasked with intercepting enemy drones.
As Lieutenant General Christian Freuding, Inspector of the German Army, noted, the unit is expected to reach initial operational capability in 2027 with a strength of 300 personnel. In the future, its personnel strength will be expanded to 600.
The location of the new formation is currently being determined based on the availability of training facilities. If successful, similar regiments will be established in other divisions.
Meanwhile, by the end of the year, the Bundeswehr will begin integrating unmanned systems into its Jäger, reconnaissance, and armored units, while also equipping the 45th Brigade with counter-drone capabilities before its deployment to Lithuania.
