The Bundeswehr’s special forces have received the first two H145M LKH SOF light combat helicopters.
The helicopters were delivered to the 4th Squadron of the 64 Helicopter Wing in Laupheim, which serves as the home base for the German Air Force’s special forces, according to Hartpunkt, citing the Luftwaffe.
The Bundeswehr has not released official details regarding the exact configuration of the helicopters’ onboard equipment and armament. However, photos circulating online show self-defense systems similar to those that have been in use on the LUH SOF variant for 10 years, as well as weapon configurations featuring a 20 mm automatic cannon and 70 mm rockets.
In total, the German Army is set to receive five H145M LKH SOF helicopters. These represent the most advanced D3 version with a five-blade main rotor, which features a smaller rotor diameter and lower noise levels compared to its predecessors.
The delivery is being carried out by Airbus Helicopters. The new variant differs from previously adopted models in its increased payload capacity and improved performance characteristics for missions carried out by special forces.
Once the delivery of all five new systems is complete, the special forces’ fleet will consist of 20 H145M helicopters. Of these, 15 will remain in the LUH SOF support configuration, while 5 will be operated in the LKH SOF variant.
