The German government likely funded the purchase of Norwegian NOMADS air defense systems for Ukraine.

The German Aid to Ukraine (GAU) project reported on this, citing military analyst Jeff2146.

According to the project, Ukraine has already received eight Norwegian NOMADS short-range air defense systems. This information aligns with reports from January of this year, when it was announced that the German company Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft (FFG) had transferred at least eight ACSV tracked armored combat support vehicles to Ukraine.

The ACSV chassis is used as the platform for the NOMADS system. At the same time, it is also used for other air defense systems, notably the Skyranger 30. It is unknown whether the NOMADS systems have entered combat duty.

Details of the contract and delivery terms are not being disclosed at this time. GAU was unable to obtain a comment from Kongsberg representatives, and the German Ministry of Defense no longer provides relevant information.

Germany’s plans to purchase NOMADS systems for Ukraine were first reported back in late July 2024. In June of that same year, the Norwegian company Kongsberg announced the start of serial production of these systems.

The system incorporates an X-band radar from the XENTA-M family, manufactured by the Danish company Weibel Scientific. In the M5 version, the air target detection range reaches 75 km.

The manufacturer has provided the option to integrate the Saab Giraffe 1X, Spexer 2000M 3D MkIII, and Oerlikon AMMR 2.0 radars.

According to the developer, the system is ideally suited for engaging small aerial targets, particularly UAVs and cruise missiles. The system is based on the IRIS-T missile, which is capable of engaging aerial targets at ranges of up to 12 km and altitudes of up to 8 km.

Konsberg has provided for the option to integrate AIM-9x Block 2 missiles upon customer request. The launcher is designed to carry 4 missiles.

For self-defense, the system can be equipped with the Protector RS4 RWS, a remotely operated weapon station featuring an M2 machine gun.

The NOMADS air defense module can optionally be mounted on any other chassis that meets the size and payload requirements.

As of today, two operators are publicly known: Norway and the Netherlands.
