On October 12, 2026, the French Navy intercepted the oil tanker DF Peak in the Indian Ocean.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced the operation.

The vessel is suspected of flying a false flag and illegally transporting fuel.

According to the French Armed Forces General Staff, the military inspected the vessel’s documents and confirmed suspicions regarding the legality of its use of the Beninese flag.

The interception took place more than 830 km south of the island of Réunion.

The tanker transported Russian oil while the G7 countries and the European Union’s oil embargo was in force. It is also linked to the sanctioned state-owned shipping company Sovcomflot.

The vessel has been sanctioned by the United States, the EU, Switzerland, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, andJapan. The EU added the tanker to its sanctions list in June 2024, when it was operating under the name Kaliningrad.

Before intercepting the DF Peak tanker on October 12, 2026, France had carried out a series of operations targeting vessels suspected of having links to Russia’s shadow fleet.

The first took place on September 27, 2025, when French military personnel boarded the tanker Boracay, which had also operated under the name Pushpa. The vessel was detained off the French coast, near Saint-Nazaire, over suspicions of links to Russia’s shadow fleet.

The next operation was carried out by the French military on January 22, 2026. They intercepted the Grinch tanker in theMediterranean Sea as it was sailing from the Russian port of Murmansk. After checking its documents, the military escorted the vessel to the Gulf of Fos-sur-Mer. In February, a French court fined the tanker’s owner and allowed the vessel to resume its voyage.

On March 20, the French Navy intercepted the Mozambique-flagged tanker Deyna in the western Mediterranean Sea. The vessel had also departed from Murmansk, and an inspection raised doubts about the legality of its use of the flag.

On May 31, 2026, French military personnel stopped the Tagor tanker in the Atlantic Ocean, west of the coast of Brittany. On June 23, the French Navy conducted another operation, this time targeting the Deliver tanker, which was sailing from the Russian port of Primorsk.
