Finland ordered the modernization of M270 MLRS

Finland has ordered an upgrade of its M270 multiple launch rocket systems to a new version.

Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen approved the modernization.

41 M270A1 systems of the Finnish Defense Forces will be upgraded to the new version of M270A2.

In August 2023, the United States approved a similar request from Finland.

The modernization will be carried out by the US corporation Lockheed Martin. The total cost of modernization of Finnish M270 MLRS will be €450 million.

The main innovation in the modernization of Finnish M270A1s will be the integration of a new fire control system that is similar to one installed on the HIMARS rocket system. The new system will also be able to use GMLRS missiles of extended range (up to 150 km) as well as the advanced Precision Strike Missile (up to 500 km).

The modernization also includes the installation of modern communications equipment and a machine gun turret. The vehicle is also likely to receive a new engine and transmission components.

The vehicles are likely to undergo an overhaul in the United States to extend their service life.

Finland purchased M270 MLRS from the Netherlands, the United States and Denmark in 2006-2013. The upgrades will ensure the use of these rocket systems in the Finnish Defense Forces until the 2050s.

M270 MLRS

The M270 MLRS is a 227mm rocket launcher system produced by Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. The vehicle was developed in the 1970s and has been in use by the US Army since 1983.

The self-propelled launcher is capable of firing standard projectiles at a maximum firing range of up to 84 km. It can also engage Lockheed Martin Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles with a maximum range of up to 300 km.

The M270A2 MLRS is equipped with a new fire control system, a new engine, transmission and an improved armored cockpit that provides protection against small arms, projectile fragments, and improvised explosive devices.
