In Russia’s Volgograd region, drones attacked the Balashovskaya electrical substation, causing a fire that left part of the region’s settlements without electricity.
Andrey Bocharov, the regional governor, confirmed the strike on the substation.
As is typical for Russian officials, he claimed that “debris fell” on the facility’s territory, allegedly after air defense systems were activated.
He also confirmed a fire at the electrical substation following the strike. In addition, eyewitnesses posted a video online that allegedly shows the moment of the strike.
“…As a result of UAV debris falling in the Novonikolayevsky district on the territory of the Balashovskaya power substation, a fire was recorded, which is being promptly extinguished by firefighters,” Bocharov wrote on Telegram.
The governor stated that repair crews are restoring power supply to the settlements near the substation.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense stated in the morning that during the night of October 15 to 16, their air defense forces had allegedly shot down 11 drones over the territory of the Volgograd region.
The Balashovskaya electrical substation has a capacity of 1,523 MVA and facilitates the transit of electricity from the Volzhskaya Hydroelectric Power Plant to the Central region of Russia.
In addition, it supplies electricity to consumers in parts of the Volgograd region, the southeastern part of the Voronezh region, and the western part of the Saratov region.
