The Czech defense holding Czechoslovak Group (CSG) has successfully completed the transfer of artillery ammunition production technology to the Ukrainian company Ukrainian Armor.

In an interview with Forbes, Jan Hamáček, Director for Strategic Projects at CSG’s Brussels office, said that the technology handover phase has been finalized. Ukrainian Armor shared the information on its Facebook page.

The two sides have also completed preparations of production sites in Ukraine, where various types of NATO-standard 155 mm artillery shells will be manufactured locally.

According to Jan Hamáček, Ukraine now has the necessary engineering solutions and production capacity in place to begin serial manufacturing.

Which shells did CSG transfer the technology for?

It was previously reported that in 2025, Ukrainian Armor launched serial production of the NATO-standard 155 mm M107 artillery round. This type of ammunition has already completed the required codification procedure.

The codification process is currently underway for another type of 155 mm ammunition – the L15. This modification features a more powerful propellant charge, improving firing performance.

Meanwhile, specialists are testing long-range versions of the ammunition. These include 155 mm Boat Tail shells, capable of striking targets at distances of 30–40 km, and Base Bleed shells with a range of 40–43 km.

Boat tail refers to a specific shape of the rear section of an artillery shell or bullet that tapers toward the end.

The main purpose of this design is to improve the projectile’s aerodynamic performance during flight.

Base bleed is a technology used to extend the range of an artillery shell by means of a special gas generator installed in its rear section.

The CEO of Ukrainian Armor, Vladyslav Belbas, noted that the partnership with Czechoslovak Group helps address the issue of resource shortages. Unlike many other manufacturers, the company’s supplies are secured by the availability of propellant charges.

Propellant charges remain the most critical scarce component in the global production of artillery rounds. Thanks to its Czech partners, the Ukrainian enterprise is provided with the necessary raw materials to ensure an uninterrupted production cycle.
