The United States intercepted and shot down drones operated by Mexican cartels that entered US airspace near El Paso, Texas.

The incident forced El Paso International Airport to temporarily suspend operations, according to USA Today.

Officials confirmed that military forces used specialized equipment to neutralize the drones that crossed the border.

United States Secretary of Transportation said aviation authorities and the Pentagon acted swiftly to respond to the threat.

He added that the situation is now under control and civil aviation flights in the region have returned to normal.
