The Swedish Navy has confirmed the presence of Russian military personnel aboard tankers from the so-called “shadow fleet” in the Baltic Sea.

According to SVT Nyheter, Russia has been conducting an operation in the Baltic Sea for some time to protect sanctioned vessels, including ships transporting Russian oil.

According to the Swedish military, Russia’s activity is manifested in the constant presence of naval vessels in designated areas of the Baltic Sea, as well as in the presence of armed personnel aboard “shadow fleet” tankers.

These are individuals in military uniform who are likely affiliated with private security companies or serving members of the armed forces.

Marko Petkovic, head of operations of the Swedish Navy, confirmed that military personnel have observed, received, and verified information about the presence of such individuals on some vessels.

According to him, the Russian Navy is increasingly carrying out surveillance and protection missions along shipping routes in the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland.

The Swedish Navy notes that Russia’s Baltic Fleet vessels have become more persistent and now cover a significant portion of the sea area. At the same time, Swedish military officials see no immediate threat and emphasize that they have a clear understanding of the situation at sea.

“There is no need to be concerned about this, but we want to inform you about what is happening at sea,” Petkovic said.

Daniel Stenling, Deputy Head of Operations at the Swedish Coast Guard, drew attention to the increased activity of Russian warships in strategic areas near the coast.

He noted that reports of armed personnel aboard tankers indicate the particular importance of the “shadow fleet” to Russia and the additional security measures it has put in place.

In June, a Russian Navy warship openly escorted sanctioned “shadow fleet” tankers through European waters and the English Channel for the first time.
