Australia Open to Deploying Peacekeepers to Support Ukraine

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed Australia’s readiness to consider a proposal to deploy peacekeepers to Ukraine should such an appeal be made, ABC reports.

Prime Minister Albanese stated, ‘Discussions are ongoing regarding the potential deployment of peacekeepers to Ukraine, and my government is open to considering any future proposals.’

According to Prime Minister Albanese, Australia has contributed $1.4 billion in direct military assistance to Ukraine and remains committed to supporting Ukraine in its defense against Russia’s invasion.

He emphasized that while Canberra desires peace in Ukraine, it also seeks to ensure that Russia’s “illegal and immoral aggression” is prevented from happening again.

The day before, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also said that his government is considering all possible options for maintaining peace in Ukraine, even with the involvement of the Canadian military, when a peace agreement is concluded in the future.

Trudeau emphasized that Canada has been actively supporting Ukraine and training the Ukrainian military since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The issue of deploying foreign troops in Ukraine has long been discussed by representatives of NATO countries. Some of them have expressed their willingness and ability to send troops to maintain peace in Ukraine.

The countries that have officially supported the idea of sending peacekeepers include Switzerland, Italy, the United Kingdom, France, and Canada.

The actual deployment of troops will be possible only after the cessation of hostilities and the signing of a peace agreement.

Militarnyi previously reported that Switzerland could provide 200 troops to participate in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine with the approval of the country’s government.

Previously, the UK government announced its readiness to deploy peacekeepers to Ukraine to ensure the implementation of the peace agreement.
