The US military has successfully tested an improved M270A2 missile launcher in Finland.

Lockheed Martin, which is performing the modernization, stated that this launcher is a “game changer.”

The launcher debuted in November at the Dynamic Front 25 exercise, which took place at the Ravajärvi training ground in Rovaniemi.

U.S. soldiers from the 41st Field Artillery Brigade conducted successful test firings, demonstrating its capabilities.

The exercise also provided an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the updated characteristics of the M270A2 MLRS.

The upgrades include the integration of a common fire control system (CFCS), which ensures compatibility with modern ammunition, such as the latest PrSM missiles and ER-GMLRS guided missiles.

Additional improvements include a 600-horsepower engine, improved transmission, and reinforced cab armor for increased protection.

These upgrades are designed to ensure the system’s operational effectiveness and service life until 2050. The US Army plans to modernize 225 M270A1 rocket launchers and convert 160 retired M270A0 combat vehicles to the A2 standard.

Lockheed Martin delivered the first modernized M270A2 combat vehicle on July 9, 2022.

The upgrade is also designed to improve the system’s mobility and accuracy, including its ability to move quickly after firing to reduce the likelihood of being hit by counter-battery fire. The M270A2 can also be transported by C-17 and C-5 aircraft, which provides flexibility in deployment.

The M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System has been in service since 1983, mainly in the United States and allied nations.

The platform has undergone several modernizations, such as integrating GPS-guided GMLRS missiles and long-range ATACMS missiles. The M270 is in service in NATO and non-NATO countries, including Ukraine.
