A maintenance center for Abrams main battle tanks will be opened in Poland.
On June 26, the Polish arms producer Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ) signed a cooperation agreement with the U.S. tank manufacturer General Dynamics.
The tanks will be serviced in the city of Poznań at the Wojskowy Zakłady Motoryzacyjne, part of the PGZ concern.
The center will service the Abrams M1A2SEPv3 and Abrams M1A1 tanks, which will be in service with the Polish military.
The cooperation agreement between the parties was concluded during the Abrams Suppliers conference, jointly organized by General Dynamics and the Poznań company Wojskowy Zakłady Motoryzacyjne.
In early June, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak announced that the Polish military should soon be receiving the first M1A1 Abrams tanks, along with other related equipment.
He noted that the transportation of the first batch of equipment to Poland has started. It will include 14 M1A1 Abrams tanks and 3 M88A2 Hercules armored recovery vehicles.
Last December, the USA approved the sale of 116 Abrams M1A1 tanks, support vehicles, and ammunition to Poland. The deal was signed on January 4, 2023, by Mariusz Błaszczak, Head of the Polish Ministry of Defense.
Also, in April 2022, Błaszczak signed a contract to purchase 250 M1A2 Abrams SEP V3 tanks.
The first tanks should be available by the end of 2024, while all deliveries will be completed by the end of 2026.
It is also planned to supply a large number of tank 120-mm ammunition and training of technical, engineering, and logistics personnel, and other related elements of logistical and software support.
Poland is purchasing American tanks to replace the T-72M/M1/M1R and PT-91 Twardy transferred to Ukraine.
