The United States sent manned and unmanned reconnaissance aircraft to patrol the Finnish-Russian border.
The US reconnaissance aircraft were spotted on August 25 and 26 on the Flightradar24 online map of aircraft.
On August 25, an RQ-4 Global Hawk reconnaissance drone of the U.S. Air Force conducted reconnaissance at the border.
The Global Hawk made several monitoring circles in the direction of the Russian city of St. Petersburg and flew toward Murmansk.
On August 26, the United States sent a manned RC-135U Combat Sent reconnaissance aircraft for monitoring, which also made several circles.
The United States uses the Boeing RC-135 family of large reconnaissance aircraft to collect, process, and transmit intelligence information.
The Combat Sent modification is designed to collect information about enemy radar systems.
The RQ-4 Global Hawk is equipped with an integrated surveillance and reconnaissance system that allows for long-range reconnaissance.
It is possible that the intelligence is related to the fact that the Finnish authorities have decided to deploy a NATO armored brigade on their territory to protect against external threats.
A new brigade of 4,000-5,000 troops is already being formed and will be based in the city of Mikkeli, near the Russian border.
The country’s leadership and the Finnish Armed Forces have concluded that the presence of NATO soldiers is necessary to strengthen “preventive deterrence.”
On July 1, the Finnish Parliament unanimously approved the Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA) with the United States. Through the agreement, Finland will open 15 of its military facilities for use by the U.S. military.
