Soldiers of the 14th Chervona Kalyna Brigade saved the life of a severely wounded fellow soldier by performing a blood transfusion right on the front lines under enemy fire.
The press service of the 14th Chervona Kalyna Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine released the footage of the operation.
During a battle in the Pokrovsk sector, Russian troops inflicted a severe wound on a Ukrainian soldier. Time was critical — the fighter was rapidly losing blood, and evacuation was impossible due to intense enemy fire.
“The only chance to save his life was an urgent blood transfusion. But in field conditions, without a surgeon nearby, without plasma, and without standard medical supplies, it seemed almost impossible. Almost. A solution was found swiftly: the reserve blood was delivered… by drone. From the rear, where there was a mobile medical point, medics prepared a blood container, securely fastened it, and sent it by drone straight to the front line,” the brigade reports.
The bomber drone successfully dropped the blood package directly into the shelter where the wounded soldier’s comrades were. Under the guidance of a surgeon via video link, the reconnaissance unit soldiers performed the transfusion.
The brigade reported that the wounded soldier was stabilized and later evacuated from the positions to the hospital. His condition is stable today.
With the increasing use of strike drones along the front lines, military positions in the most active areas have essentially become cut off from the rear, making rotations, supply deliveries, and the evacuation of the wounded extremely risky. As a result, stories of failed evacuations and casualties due to the lack of medical assistance have become more frequent.
Meanwhile, drones have become an important means of logistical communication for transporting supplies under the threat of enemy artillery and drones, where foot units and armored vehicles are unable to operate. Delivering blood for transfusions on-site has become one of the missions of UAVs.
In early February, the soldiers of the 12th Azov Special Operations Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine similarly saved one of their soldiers by delivering blood to him directly in the trench using drones.
“The soldier sustained a severe shrapnel wound to the neck. Heavy blood loss, a difficult evacuation, and minimal chances of survival led doctors to make a radical decision,” the 12th Azov Special Operations Brigade stated.
The drones delivered all the necessary supplies: transfusion systems, an intraosseous device, warming devices, calcium, painkillers, antibiotics, etc.
Conducting the operation right in the trenches was a key factor in the fighter’s survival, as he was in serious condition at the position for about 10 hours from the moment he was wounded until evacuation.
