Unknown Object Flew From Belarus to Russia’s Kaliningrad Region Through Lithuania

An unknown object flew from Belarus to Russia’s Kaliningrad region through Lithuania, remaining in the airspace of the NATO member state for about 20 minutes.

Lithuanian broadcaster LRT reported this.

At 4:05 a.m. on Sept. 13, Lithuanian Air Force radars near Varėna detected a radar track moving toward the Kaliningrad region.

At 4:25 a.m., the object left Lithuanian airspace and crossed the border into the Kaliningrad region.

“After receiving information about the object detected by radar, the situation was immediately assessed, and the relevant institutions were informed of the possible need to warn the public,” the Lithuanian military reported.

According to the military, the available data were insufficient to determine the object type with certainty. Meanwhile, its direction of movement and other information available at the time did not indicate a direct threat to residents or facilities in Lithuania.

Fighter jets assigned to the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission, which protects the airspace of the Baltic states, were also not scrambled to intercept it.

“Therefore, after the object left Lithuanian airspace, there were no grounds to issue an air raid alert,” the military noted.

Giedrius Mišutis, a representative of Lithuania’s State Border Guard Service, told BNS that border guards did not detect the object. According to him, the border guard service’s surveillance system is designed to monitor the physical land border and can detect only objects flying at extremely low altitudes.
