Ukrainian M113: UkrArmoTech’s Skif APC Enters Factory Testing

UkrArmoTech has started factory trials of the prototype of its first domestically developed tracked armored personnel carrier, the Skif.

The vehicle was designed using lessons learned from combat against Russia, as well as requirements from the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine to create a platform that exceeds the American M113 in both protection and firepower, according to Defense Express.

The first prototype features an aluminum hull, marking the first time Ukrainian manufacturers have used this material for a combat vehicle. The factory tests will assess its mobility and performance, after which developers will decide whether to keep aluminum for mass production or switch to armored steel.

The Skif APC accommodates a crew of three and up to eight dismounts, who exit via a rear ramp. The engine and transmission are located at the front, and the modular chassis design allows for the creation of a whole family of armored vehicles for different roles.

Under the ‘aluminum’ concept, the APC weighs up to 15 tons and is powered by a 360 hp diesel engine. It provides ballistic protection of the frontal arc in accordance with STANAG 4569 Level 4, as well as mine protection capable of withstanding the detonation of up to 6 kg of explosives under the hull or track.

The APC is armed with a remotely operated weapon station equipped with either a 12.7 mm or 14.5 mm machine gun. The Skif armored personnel carrier is also fitted with modern Ukrainian-made communications, navigation, electronic warfare systems, and air conditioning.

At the initial stage, about 60% of the components, including the engine and transmission, are imported. In the future, UkrArmoTech plans to move toward in-house production of certain components and assemblies to expand its capabilities and increase localization.
