UK Offers ‘Nuclear Umbrella’ to JEF Alliance Members

The UK has proposed a new nuclear deterrence mechanism for countries participating in the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF).

Finnish public broadcaster Yle reported the proposal.

General Sir Gwyn Jenkins, First Sea Lord and Chief of the Royal Navy Staff, announced it during his visit to Finland.

The Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) is a multinational defense partnership led by the UK, established in 2014.

The JEF comprises ten countries: the UK, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and the Netherlands.

The alliance is designed to respond rapidly to crises in Northern Europe, the Baltic region, and the North Atlantic, and to complement NATO structures.

The proposal would extend the UK’s “nuclear umbrella” to JEF allies as an additional security mechanism outside NATO’s formal procedures.

The JEF member countries are expected to sign the agreement at the summit in Oslo in November.

British Admiral Gwyn Jenkins stressed that Royal Navy nuclear-powered submarines on patrol in the Atlantic would provide the protection.

The UK possesses Trident II (D5) nuclear ballistic missiles, which are deployed aboard Vanguard-class nuclear-powered submarines.

A key feature of the proposal is that this defense mechanism could operate without requiring the activation of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.

Previously, Finland also joined a French-led nuclear deterrence initiative.
