The 117th Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has been reinforced with British AS-90 self-propelled artillery systems.

A photo of the self-propelled artillery system was posted on the brigade’s Facebook page.

“…in the skillful hands of our specialists, the AS-90 is capable of inflicting (and inflicting) devastating and crushing blows on the enemy with sniper accuracy…”, the brigade said.

The UK announced its intention to provide Ukraine with AS-90 self-propelled artillery systems and shells as early as 2022.

Early last year, it was reported that Ukraine had received a total of 32 AS-90 artillery systems, 20 of which were fully operational.

Twelve artillery systems were transferred to be used as donors for removing spare parts and installing them on combat-ready vehicles.

The United Kingdom is providing Ukraine with new barrels for AS-90 self-propelled howitzers as part of military aid.

These British artillery systems are actively used by the Ukrainian Defense Forces to confront the Russian invaders.

AS-90

The AS-90 self-propelled artillery system is equipped with a L31A1 155-mm gun with a 39-caliber barrel length manufactured by BAE Systems Global Combat Systems. The self-propelled guns were produced from 1992 to 1995. In total, 179 units were delivered to the British Army.

The artillery system is capable of firing a salvo of three rounds in less than 10 seconds, and in intensive firing, it has a constant rate of fire of two shots per minute or six shots in three minutes.

The gun has a double-baffle muzzle brake, a fume extractor, and an integral 12-round primer magazine.

The gun is capable of firing all standard NATO shells, including the American M107, German DM121, and British L15A1/2. The total ammunition for the gun is 48 projectiles and propellant charges, which are placed in the turret.
