Sweden will purchase U.S.-made HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems for approximately SEK 7 billion ($729 million) and will cooperate with Finland on their operation.

The Swedish government announced the deal on its official website.

The first HIMARS rocket systems, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, are expected to be delivered in 2027.

The Swedish Armed Forces will fund the purchase through its investment plan and the country’s 2025–2030 defense program.

The HIMARS rocket systems will expand the Swedish Army’s long-range strike capabilities and strengthen NATO’s defensive posture in Northern Europe.

They will complement existing Archer artillery systems and mortars while ensuring interoperability with weapons systems operated by other NATO countries.

According to Swedish broadcaster SVT, the deal involves more than ten HIMARS launchers and a large quantity of GMLRS guided rockets. The Swedish government’s official announcement did not specify the exact number of systems.

Meanwhile, Saab and Lockheed Martin have signed a letter of intent to potentially integrate GLSDB munitions into the new systems.

The companies are also considering producing PrSM precision-guided ballistic missiles in Sweden. HIMARS and other systems, including the Patriot air defense system, use the missiles.

However, the Swedish government’s official announcement does not yet specify which type of missile it plans to manufacture in Sweden.

HIMARS is a U.S.-made highly mobile wheeled multiple launch rocket system designed to conduct precision strikes and rapidly relocate to new firing positions. It can carry six GMLRS rockets, two PrSM missiles, or one ATACMS missile.

PrSM is a surface-to-surface ballistic missile with a range of 60 km to more than 500 km, developed to replace ATACMS. A single HIMARS launcher can carry two PrSM missiles instead of one ATACMS, or a pod containing six GMLRS rockets. The missile is also compatible with the tracked M270 launchers.
