First Archer 8×8s on MAN Chassis Delivered to the Swedish Army

The Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) has delivered the first four Archer 8×8 self-propelled artillery systems, based on MAN trucks, to the country’s Armed Forces.

The ceremony took place at the Willingsberg training ground near Karlskoga.

The Swedish military will use the first six Archer 8×8 systems for training personnel. The four delivered systems have already been assigned to the Bergslagen Artillery Regiment A 9, and the remaining two are scheduled for delivery in the fall of 2026.

In total, FMV has signed a contract with BAE Systems Bofors to deliver 48 Archer 8×8 systems. The new version will complement the Archer 6×6 artillery systems, which the Swedish Army operates on articulated dump trucks.

The Swedish Army will begin fully using the Archer 8×8 during conscript training starting in the 2026–2027 training year. Subsequently, the systems will be integrated into new combat units.

After delivering the six training vehicles, FMV will begin supplying the remaining ordered systems. The entire order of 48 Archer 8×8 systems is scheduled for delivery to the Swedish Armed Forces by 2030.

The Swedish military command expects that the new version of the Archer will enhance the artillery capabilities of the ground forces, particularly in the south of the country and on the island of Gotland.

MAN chassis

Sweden has mounted the Archer artillery system on the MAN HX2 8×8 manufactured by Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV). FMV notes that the new chassis is intended to improve the system’s operational and tactical mobility.

One of the main reasons for this decision was the transition from the articulated dump truck used by the Archer 6×6 to a full-fledged 8×8 military truck.

For Sweden, this means significantly higher road speeds: the Archer 8×8 can travel up to 90 km/h, while the Archer 6×6 has a speed of about 50–60 km/h.

This allows artillery units to change deployment areas more quickly and leave firing positions after completing a mission.

In addition to mobility, the reliability and maturity of the MAN HX platform played an important role in selecting the chassis. This proven family of heavy military trucks is operated by the armed forces of various countries.

Using a mature, production-ready platform reduces technical and operational risks compared to developing an artillery system based on a completely new chassis.
