Russians use bombs equipped with EW countermeasures system

The Russian module of gliding and correction for FAB-250 and FAB-500 bombs can resist electronic warfare.

In the intact module, a “Kometa-M” four-element small-sized adaptive antenna array was found.

Due to the formation of a radiation pattern, the system allows it to reduce the impact of EW “cutting out” the sector with an obstacle.

“This CRPA Kometa system protects the bomb from our jammers. And it can hit the target accurately. Nearby, we will handle this Kometa with jammers, but we will not cover all the front,” said Serhey Flash.

In addition to MPK (gliding and correction module – rus. ed.), “Kometa-M” can also be coupled with the Orlan UAV.

The system includes Western-made components from Intel, Taoglas and Taiwan’s Cirocomm.

Militarnyi earlier reported that sappers of 28th Mechanized Brigade had recently destroyed FAB-250 with an MPK kit.

Gliding and correction module

The development of the gliding and correction module in Russia was previously conducted by the GNPP Bazalt specialists.

The kit was first showcased at the Aero India-2003 exhibition.

The Russians presented information about the module at the MAKS-2009 air show on the example of the FAB-500М62 bomb equipped with it.

Then four variants of MPK were proposed: unguided for use from low altitudes; with an inertial guidance system; equipped with a GPS/GLONASS unit; and with a pulse jet engine.

According to the manufacturer, the module allows hitting targets at distances from 6 to 100 km, depending on the guidance system, with an accuracy of 10 m (variants with a satellite navigation unit).

In early May 2023, Russian propaganda announced the creation of a similar module for FAB-250 bombs by an unnamed manufacturer.

Most likely, the Kometa-M system appeared on the latest versions of the module.
