Russians Patent Armored Tractor with Turret and Thermal Signature Protection

Russia’s Bryansk Automobile Plant (BAZ) has patented a new heavy-duty tractor unit featuring a fully armored cab, a machine-gun turret, and measures designed to reduce its thermal signature.

The relevant patent, RU 2870257 C1 Tractor Unit, was published by Russia’s Federal Institute of Industrial Property (FIPS). BAZ filed the patent application on December 25, 2025, and the patent was registered and published on September 18, 2026. Blogger and well-known tank history researcher Andrei Tarasenko reported this on his X account.

According to the document, the vehicle is built on a four-axle chassis and equipped with a fifth-wheel coupling for towing heavy semi-trailers.

The tractor’s cab is fully armored and features a frame-and-panel design. Its roof has a slewing ring with a hatch and a turret designed to mount a machine gun. The patent documentation does not specify a particular type of machine gun.

A separate engine compartment is located behind the cab and features a welded frame made of rectangular steel tubing. A hood and protective panels with doors and access hatches enclose it.

The designers paid particular attention to reducing the vehicle’s thermal signature. Heat shielding panels are provided on the outer surfaces of the cab steps, the engine compartment walls, the batteries, the air filters, and the steering hydraulic system’s oil tank housing.

The spark-arrestor mufflers are also equipped with heat shielding, which, according to the patent, is intended to reduce the tractor’s thermal signature.

The transmission components and chassis wheel wells are to be protected by additional armor-steel panels. The design also includes a filtration and ventilation system, a winch, a spare-wheel removal mechanism, and main and auxiliary fuel tanks.

For camouflage, the vehicle features dedicated staples for attaching camouflage netting and mounts for securing cut vegetation.

The technical result claimed in the patent is the creation of a protected vehicle capable of towing heavy semi-trailers. However, the patent publication itself does not indicate that a prototype has been built or that serial production of the tractor unit has begun.
