A Polish national has been arrested on suspicion of spying for Russia, the country’s National Public Prosecutor’s Office said.
According to European Pravda, the 28-year-old suspect, identified as Viktor Z., was detained on June 4 in central Poland.
He is accused of providing information to Russian intelligence that could compromise Poland’s national security.
The Mazovian branch of Poland’s National Prosecutor’s Office said law enforcement had carried out searches at multiple sites in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship following the arrest.
Prosecutors allege that between February 28, 2024, and April 30, 2025, Viktor Z. collected and passed on classified information concerning the operation of facilities critical to Poland’s defense.
He has been formally charged with espionage and could face a prison sentence ranging from eight years to life imprisonment. A court has ordered him held in pre-trial detention for three months.
Investigators say the suspect’s actions were motivated by his pro-Russian views.
In recent years, European countries have reported increased activity by Russian intelligence services, including recruitment efforts targeting foreign nationals for espionage and sabotage.
Last month, French intelligence published a 16-page report detailing extensive Russian efforts to make France shudder. The document, titled “Russian Threats and Actions Against France,” outlines cyberattacks, espionage, sabotage, and attempts to interfere in domestic politics.
Separately, six Bulgarian nationals were recently convicted in the United Kingdom for spying for Russia. They received various prison sentences.
