Poland has opened an investigation after a Russian reconnaissance drone was discovered near the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region.

According to Polish Radio, the drone wreckage was found on the morning of May 8 in a rapeseed field near the village of Oseka in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, about 20 kilometers from the Russian border.

According to prosecutors in Olsztyn, investigators are convinced that the drone illegally crossed the Polish-Russian border.

“A case has been opened regarding the illegal crossing of the state border by an unmanned aerial vehicle, parts of which were discovered in agricultural fields,” prosecutor’s office spokesperson Daniel Brodowski reported.

After the drone was discovered, bomb disposal experts, firefighters, and the military gendarmerie arrived at the scene. An inspection showed that the drone was not armed and posed no threat.

According to Polish media reports, the unmanned aerial vehicle bore Russian inscriptions and was equipped with cameras.

The type of the intruding drone has not yet been disclosed.

Deputy Interior Minister Wiesław Szczepański stated that there was no chance to intercept the drone because it was flying at high speed and landed immediately after crossing the Polish border.

Russian Drones in Poland

On September 10, 2025, Russian drones entered Polish airspace during one of the largest attacks on Ukraine. Polish and Dutch fighter jets were scrambled at the time to intercept them.

Following the incident, drone debris began to be discovered across the country. A total of 21 drones linked to the September 10 attack were found.

In November 2025, an unidentified aerial vehicle that had entered from the direction of Belarus was also discovered in Poland.

It was later revealed that the device had been used for cigarette smuggling, and authorities failed to detect the flight in time.

Militarnyi previously reported that on March 12, 2026, an unidentified drone was discovered at a lignite coal mine in the village of Gałczyce in Poland’s Greater Poland Voivodeship.
