On the night of April 17, 2026, Russia launched a Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket from the Plesetsk military cosmodrome with a classified payload for the Ministry of Defense.
The launch was reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
According to the ministry’s statement, all satellites were placed into their target orbits and transferred to the control of ground-based assets of the Russian Aerospace Forces.
As analysts note, the published footage of the launch showed the Soyuz rocket with a fairing, which is typically used in conjunction with the Volga booster. At the same time, no warnings were issued regarding the ocean areas typically used for the reentry of this satellite.
The US Space Force has cataloged three objects in polar orbits at altitudes of approximately 450–550 kilometers. Such orbits are characteristic, in particular, of reconnaissance satellites.
This is Russia’s second launch of military satellites in 2026. The previous one took place on February 5. Nine satellites were placed into orbit on that occasion.
On the same day, the US Space Force released the orbital parameters of nine objects associated with this Soyuz-2.1b launch:
