Russia is conducting a disinformation campaign against U.S. Democratic and Republican candidates who support Ukraine ahead of the midterm congressional elections.
This was stated by Congressman Jim Himes and Senator Mark Warner following a closed-door briefing by U.S. intelligence agencies, according to Politico.
One of the issues Moscow may use to sow political division in American society is support for Ukraine.
According to the lawmakers, the Russian campaign involves spreading disinformation online, including fake content created using artificial intelligence.
Such operations are aimed at discrediting Democratic and Republican candidates and undermining trust in U.S. government institutions.
Himes and Warner noted that Russia is employing election interference tactics that U.S. intelligence agencies have also documented during previous election campaigns.
According to the lawmakers, disputes over U.S. aid to Ukraine could become one of the tools Moscow uses to exacerbate political divisions in the United States.
At the same time, Himes emphasized that there is currently no evidence that Russia or other states are planning or capable of directly interfering with U.S. election infrastructure or altering the results of the vote.
This primarily refers to information operations that could influence public opinion.
The U.S. midterm congressional elections are scheduled for November 3, 2026.
Democrats also fear that President Donald Trump may use unsubstantiated claims of foreign interference to cast doubt on the election results.
As previously reported by Militarnyi, some Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives are prepared to block additional funding for the Pentagon if the Donald Trump administration will not increase pressure on Russia.
