Russian forces have started using a new reconnaissance drone launched ahead of Shahed loitering munition attacks, according to military and radio technology specialist Sergey Flesh, who photographed the downed device.
The drone is designed to scout border and frontline routes before Shahed drone strikes.
It is also believed to monitor the operation of Ukrainian air defense systems, particularly in identifying mobile air defense fire teams.
To avoid early detection, the reconnaissance drone is built to resemble a Shahed, increasing the likelihood of confusing air defense operators.
Flesh reported that the drone typically operates at altitudes between 1,000 and 3,000 meters. At those heights, its analog video transmitter in the 1.2 GHz band can transmit images over distances of 50 kilometers or more.
The ExpressLRS system known for its high packet refresh rate and extended communication range provides the control.
The drone’s capabilities allow Russian forces to assess frontline conditions in real time, avoid Ukrainian air defense zones, and adjust their strike plans accordingly.
In response to Shahed drone threats, Ukraine has recently introduced two interceptor drone models, developed by WIY DRONES.
The first is the STRILA interceptor, capable of speeds over 300 kilometers per hour.
The second model, BUREWIY, can destroy enemy drones at altitudes between 1,000 and 2,000 meters and has a top speed of 250 kilometers per hour.
