Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) has published detailed information on Russia’s new Filin cruise missile.

The information, interactive 3D model, list of components, and electronic component database are available on the War&Sanctions portal.

According to Ukraine’s intelligence, Russian forces began using the weapon against Ukraine in late summer this year.

The missile was developed by Russia’s Molniya Scientific Production Association, a joint-stock company that is part of the Tactical Missiles Corporation.

The emergence of the Filin missile continues Russia’s military-industrial complex’s trend of developing low-cost, ground-launched, jet-powered strike weapons.

The missile’s 3.5-meter-long fuselage and 3-meter wingspan are made of composite materials, including carbon fiber and fiberglass. The developers used 3D printing to manufacture some structural components.

The 3D model shows that the Filin cruise missile has an elongated fuselage with a pointed nose, a straight wing of moderate aspect ratio, a tail assembly with a vertical fin and horizontal stabilizers, and a rectangular air intake on top of the fuselage.

The maximum speed claimed by the Russians is 800 km/h, with a range of up to 1,200 km at altitudes from extremely low to 6 km.

The missile is launched from a ground-based launcher using a powder booster. Its warhead weighs either 50 or 100 kg, depending on the variant.

The onboard equipment is manufactured by PLAZ LLC, which is also involved in producing Harpy UAVs. The guidance system uses a Chinese inertial navigation system and a 16-channel Kometa CRPA antenna, which provides resistance to electronic warfare interference.

The electronic component database contains a higher proportion of Chinese elements (22 identified units compared to 35 from the United States) and standardized circuit boards.

The missile is powered by the Russian R500 engine manufactured by Reynolds LLC, which has previously been identified in the S-71 Kover and Monoсhrome cruise air missiles.
