On October 1, the first reconnaissance satellite developed by the German company Rheinmetall and the Italian company Argotec was successfully launched into orbit.
Rheinmetall reported that the satellite was launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
With this launch, the German company, through its subsidiary Rheinmetall Italia S.p.A., is beginning the targeted development of an independent satellite constellation for military purposes. The focus is on airspace surveillance.
“The satellite program focuses on gathering intelligence rather than traditional mapping of ground targets,” Rheinmetall noted.
The satellite’s sensors detect signs of potential air threats on the ground, providing critical early warning and the data necessary for air defense.
The collected situational awareness data and imagery will be processed using artificial intelligence.
The system combines various capability layers — space-based surveillance, ground stations, and tactical networks — which will be managed through a command and control center.
“Together with Rheinmetall, we are transforming space technology into a valuable operational asset — scalable, networked, and ready to support complex defense scenarios,” said David Avino, CEO and founder of Argotec, regarding the satellite.
Building on this initial capability, the space component is planned to be gradually expanded into a more comprehensive satellite constellation.
The next satellite launch is already scheduled in the program’s roadmap for 2028.
Last year, Rheinmetall and satellite manufacturer ICEYE also signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a joint venture for satellite production.
