Poland No Longer Wants Nuclear Weapons on Its Soil

Poland does not intend to deploy nuclear weapons on its territory, despite Warsaw’s efforts to come under the U.S. and French ‘nuclear umbrella’ and statements made last year.

RMF24 reports this, citing Deputy Minister of National Defence Paweł Zalewski.

Meanwhile, Poland wants to remain an active part of NATO’s nuclear deterrence system.

Answering journalists’ questions, Zalewski stressed that even in the context of a future U.S. military presence in Poland, the deployment of nuclear weapons is not envisaged.

In April 2025, it emerged that then-Polish President Andrzej Duda had said the country needed to seek protection under France’s nuclear deterrence against a potential Russian threat.

Meanwhile, Duda called for U.S. nuclear weapons to be stationed in Poland.

In September 2025, the French Air and Space Force deployed Rafale fighter jets to Poland capable of carrying ASMP missiles with nuclear warheads.

Later, in February 2026, it was reported that Poland’s current president, Karol Nawrocki, said the country should consider developing its own nuclear weapons.
