Nigeria Receives First Three M-346FA Light Attack Aircraft

The Nigerian Air Force has successfully completed factory acceptance tests in Italy for the first batch of three Leonardo M-346FA light attack aircraft.

The three aircraft are the first batch of a planned fleet of 24 M-346FAs and represent an important step in implementing the Nigerian Air Force modernization program.

“The successful completion of the acceptance process confirms that the three aircraft, designated NAF 01, NAF 02, and NAF 03, have met the required contractual, technical and airworthiness standards. Following comprehensive verification by representatives of the NAF, MOD, and Leonardo Aircraft Division, the aircraft were formally certified for delivery, paving the way for their induction into the NAF inventory as part of its expanding fleet of modern air combat platforms,” Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Nigerian Air Force Director of Public Relations and Information, highlighted.

He also mentioned that, in addition to conducting acceptance tests, the delegation held detailed discussions with Leonardo Aircraft Division on pilot and technical personnel training, logistics support, and long-term operation of the aircraft fleet.

The military also inspected a full-flight simulator, virtual reality-based training systems and other ground training equipment for preparing pilots and technical personnel.

Nigeria signed an agreement to purchase 24 M-346FA aircraft in late 2022. The value of the deal was approximately €1 billion.

The new Italian aircraft are intended to replace the Alpha Jet A/E light jet attack and training aircraft currently operated by the Nigerian Air Force.

In addition to supplying the aircraft, Leonardo, in partnership with the Italian Air Force, will train Nigerian pilots at the International Flight Training School in Galatina (Lecce) and at Decimomannu Air Base in Sardinia.

M-346FA Light Combat Aircraft

The M-346 Fighter Attack, developed on the basis of the M-346 trainer aircraft, conducted its first flight in 2020. The light combat aircraft received seven hardpoints: two on the wingtips, two under each wing, and one under the fuselage.

The aircraft is equipped with the Grifo-M-346 airborne radar.

The airframe of the combat version is almost identical to the basic one. The only modification was an increase in the payload capacity of the external hardpoints. Three hardpoints — the centerline and inner wing stations — can carry 1,000 kg each, while the two outer wing stations can carry 500 kg each.

Two additional wingtip stations are intended for mounting air-to-air missiles. A centerline hardpoint can carry a reconnaissance or targeting pod.
