The National Guard of Ukraine is establishing a new corps composed of five brigades, drawing on the experience and operational model of the Khartiya Brigade.

Colonel Ihor Obolensky, commander of the 13th Brigade of the National Guard, also known as the Khartiya Brigade, announced the formation of the new corps.

Each brigade within the corps has a proven track record in both offensive and defensive operations.

“There will be a restructuring of command, and we aim to build corps-level leadership modeled after Khartiya 2.0,’” Obolensky said. “For this, we need both those who have been with us and new personnel from other brigades.”

He emphasized that the National Guard’s leadership support has allowed for a flexible approach, with each brigade contributing its expertise to a unified structure.

According to him, the main task for each brigade is to contribute its own experience, including management.

“The command has a clear vision for the corps. The Minister of Internal Affairs and the National Guard’s leadership are providing opportunities for development and creative approaches,” Vsevolod Kozhemyako, the brigade’s founder and a volunteer, shared.

Kozhemyako acknowledged that challenges remain but expressed confidence in the strength of the commanders’ strategic ideas. He also highlighted a strong emphasis on integrating young personnel into leadership roles.

The restructuring follows the recent formalization of Ukraine’s 3rd Separate Assault Brigade as the Third Army Corps.

In military doctrine, an army corps is a permanent formation comprising multiple brigades. Its primary function is to coordinate brigade-level operations within a designated area during both offensive and defensive actions. Corps command structures also oversee logistical support and resource distribution in accordance with battlefield requirements.

A corps typically consists of two to five brigades, with personnel numbers ranging between 10,000 and over 50,000, depending on national military doctrine and operational demands. The command structure is equipped with sufficient resources to reallocate forces as needed to key sectors of the front line.
