Authorities in North Macedonia have carried out a large-scale counterterrorism operation targeting a suspected ISIS cell.
According to Sloboden Pechat, citing sources within the country’s security forces, the operation involved searches at several locations in Skopje.
The searches were conducted in the morning as part of an investigation into the activities of a group of individuals suspected of being involved in terrorist activities.
The operation was jointly carried out by North Macedonia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and the National Security Agency.
According to investigators, security forces identified a group of around five people amid suspicions of illegal activity.
Members of the group are suspected of loan-sharking, indoctrinating civilians, and inciting terrorism.
During the searches, law enforcement officers discovered and seized a flag belonging to the Islamic State terrorist organization.
In addition to terrorist insignia, authorities seized weapons and a large quantity of ammunition at the sites targeted in the operation.
The Balkan region, particularly North Macedonia, has long been regarded by ISIS networks as an important logistical hub that could serve as a transit route to Turkey and onward to conflict zones.
The discovery of flags and weapons may indicate that the group was operating as a cell involved in recruiting radicalized young people and stockpiling resources.
Such groups often use loan-sharking and other criminal activities to raise funds for themselves, prepare for possible terrorist attacks, or send recruits to conflict zones.
In May, Turkish authorities detained 324 people suspected of having links to the Islamic State.
