F-16 Crashed at U.S. Base in Spangdahlem, Germany

An F-16 fighter jet crashed at the U.S. Spangdahlem Air Base in the Eifel region.

This was reported by the German media outlet Südwestrundfunk (SWR), citing base officials.

The pilot ejected. He received medical attention. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

A squadron of F-16 fighter jets, consisting of about 20 aircraft, is stationed at Spangdahlem Air Base. In recent months, numerous U.S. transport aircraft have also been spotted at the base.

The German Air Traffic Control Authority reported that the crash occurred following training exercises.

Local residents saw a large plume of smoke following the crash. Firefighters and police are on the airfield.

According to SWR sources, two aircraft took off from the base in the afternoon of September 22, one of which crashed.

U.S. military personnel are stationed at approximately 20 locations in Germany, primarily in the south and southwest of the country.

The U.S. Air Force has been stationed at Spangdahlem Air Base since the mid-1950s. During Donald Trump’s first presidential term, there were plans to withdraw U.S. troops from this air base, but those plans were put on hold in 2021. In 2026, Poland announced that it was ready to accept U.S. troops withdrawn from Germany.
