Poland is ready to host American troops if Donald Trump decides to reduce the U.S. military presence in Germany.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki said the country could serve as a new base for U.S. forces, according to RMF24.
He stressed that keeping American troops in Europe is vital for regional security. Nawrocki made the comments during a visit to Lithuania on Wednesday, May 6.
Karol Nawrocki stressed that Poland already has all the necessary infrastructure to immediately accommodate U.S. troops.
“I believe it is the responsibility of the President of Poland to convince Donald Trump to keep these soldiers in Europe, namely in Poland or one of the Baltic states. I will encourage such decisions,” Nawrocki said.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki emphasized that the strongest possible U.S. military presence in Europe is in the security interests of the Baltic states, as well as Central and Eastern Europe, “regardless of political views.”
Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz also supported this position, adding that expanding the U.S. presence is a “strategic goal” for the country, one Poland has been preparing for over many years.
Last week, the Pentagon announced plans to withdraw around 5,000 troops from Germany.
The process is expected to be completed within 6 to 12 months. The withdrawal will reportedly include a U.S. Army combat brigade and a Long-Range Fires Battalion, which had previously been planned for deployment in Europe.
The decision comes amid growing tensions between U.S. President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The German leader publicly criticized Washington’s policy regarding the war against Iran, prompting a sharp reaction from the U.S. administration.
Militarnyi previously reported that European diplomats expected the U.S. military contingent in Europe to be reduced by 20,000 troops.
