An explosion occurred at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta at approximately 4 p.m. local time on October 17, 2026, followed by a fire. The blaze quickly spread beyond the base.

The Department of National Defence of Canada reported the incident.

“It is with profound sadness that the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) confirms the incident resulted in fatalities and injuries. As emergency responders continue their work and the situation continues to evolve, the full extent of the impact remains under assessment. Our immediate priority is supporting those affected and notifying next of kin. We will not confirm casualty or injury details until that process is complete,” the department said.

According to military sources cited by Canadian publication Global News, at least seven people were killed and dozens injured in the explosion and fire. The sources said that during a live-fire exercise, a munition struck a gas pipeline or gas well on the base, triggering the explosion.

The fire broke out shortly afterward, with wind gusts of up to 100 km/h fueling its spread. Fire crews from several surrounding areas were deployed. By Saturday evening, responders had contained the fire and prevented it from spreading beyond the base.

Other publications have also reported a high casualty count. A doctor in Edmonton, located 180 kilometers northwest of the base, said casualties were being taken to hospitals across the city because medical facilities near the base were “completely overwhelmed” by the number of people needing treatment.

Warren Thirsk, an emergency physician at Royal Alexandra Hospital, told CBC News that even Edmonton’s hospitals would struggle to handle the number of patients, describing the situation as a disaster of a scale that occurs only once every 15 to 25 years.

STARS air ambulance also responded to a call in the Wainwright area, deploying aircraft based in Edmonton and Saskatoon.

Wainwright Base

Wainwright is one of the busiest Canadian Army training bases. It is located in Alberta, just south of the town of the same name.

The base is home to the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, which organizes collective training exercises and assesses troops’ readiness for operations in Canada and abroad. To simulate combat conditions, the center uses engagement simulation systems, purpose-built urban facilities, role-players acting as civilians, and a permanent opposing force unit.

The base also houses the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre. In April 2026, it was renamed and placed under the centralized command of the Army training system.

The center focuses on training individual soldiers and developing junior leaders. Since June 2026, Wainwright has also hosted an FPV drone operator course.
