Drones strike an oil depot in Russia
Fire at an oil depot in Yurovka, Krasnodar Krai, Russia, May 9, 2024.

A Russian oil depot in the Krasnodar Krai was hit and severely damaged through a drone attack.

Local media reported on this.

On the morning of May 9, at about 4:00 a.m., a group of 6 to 7 drones hit a Russian oil depot near the village of Yurovka, Krasnodar Krai.

Several fuel tanks were successfully hit and caught fire as a result of the attack. According to preliminary information, there were no casualties.

Local authorities also confirmed the drone strike and explosions at the oil depot:

“About 6 UAVs were defeated, but some fell on the territory of the oil depot. As a result, a fire broke out and several tanks were damaged.”

The oil depot in Yurovka is a typical fuel infrastructure facility with 5 large fuel tanks of 5,000 cubic meters each, as well as some smaller ones. They are connected to a railroad line that can also accommodate fuel tankers.

According to the footage from the scene, at least two large “five thousand” RVS-5000 tanks were damaged. They are apparently damaged beyond repair, and the fire in the tanks will be extinguished only when the fuel burns out.

The Russian facility is located 300 kilometers in a straight line from the line of contact in the Zaporizhzhia region. However, it is possible that the drones could have been launched via the Black Sea, which could have extended the flight duration to 800 kilometers.

During the drone attack, eyewitnesses recorded the Russian Mi-8 helicopter arriving at the scene.

It is possible that this helicopter may belong to a Russian army aviation unit and was involved in intercepting drones. This tactic has been used by the invaders many times before.

In February, a Russian Mi-24 attack helicopter attempted to intercept an unidentified drone in the skies over the Leningrad region in a similar way.
