Drone Attack on Railway Near Military Unit in Rostov Region

On the night of April 21, drones attacked a railway near a Russian military base in the Rostov region.

Residents of Novocherkassk and other nearby towns reported hearing numerous explosions throughout the night.

Astra, after analyzing videos from eyewitnesses on social media, concluded that at least one of the explosions occurred near the railway close to the village of Persianovsky in the Oktyabrsky district.

The military unit 22179 is located about 1.6 km from the site, and a repair and supply unit 3658 was previously located about 800 meters away for an extended period. However, it is unknown whether it is still there.

The military unit 22179 is part of the 150th Guards Motor Rifle Division, which is part of the 8th Guards Army of the Southern Military District of the Russian Federation.

Yuri Slusar, the Governor of the Rostov region, reported during the night that a massive drone attack caused a disruption in the operation of the railway contact network in the area.

“…As a result, the movement of three trains heading north was stopped near the Novocherkassk railway station, and the movement of four trains heading south was halted near the Kamennolomni railway station…,” the Russian official stated.

He also claimed that Russia’s air defense allegedly destroyed more than forty drones in the city of Taganrog and 11 districts of the region.

In the morning, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation claimed it had allegedly shot down 97 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles of aircraft type, including over the Rostov region.

As a result of a strike by Neptune cruise missiles on April 19, two production workshops at the Atlant Aero plant in Russian Taganrog, which manufactures Molniya drones, were destroyed.

The facility is also involved in producing components for Orion drones.
